Chatel Ski Resort

This traditionally rustic ski resort is nestled in the breathtaking Savoyard mountain village that makes up part of the Portes du Soleil circuit. Châtel hosts a number of exciting slopes and runs and lies close to an assortment of neighbouring resorts that are accessible via the pistes. You are spoiled for choice when it comes to runs and slopes which cater for every type of skier. There is a tangibly peaceful atmosphere and the beautiful location is complimented by chalet-style apartments that rub shoulders with old farms where cattle still live in winter. The ski season runs from December to April and there is certainly something for everyone in this convivial resort.

Beginners

There is a safe base to learn in which features a slow rope pull to help you build up your confidence on the slopes. Super Châtel is the perfect location for beginners, ideal for those with little or no experience and is only a short and enjoyable gondola-ride away. There is even a specially prepared Milka slope nearby that has been designed specifically for children.

Intermediates

The Portes du Soleil is an intermediates’ paradise, with some of the best recommended tree-lined red slopes allowing you to glide alongside remarkable views over Lake Geneva. There is an enormous scope for intermediates, with an abundance of swooping blues and wide scoping reds. Once you have built up your confidence, there is an expedition to the Hauts-Forts runs above Avoriaz where the runs back to Plaine Dranse are real reds.

Advanced

Advanced skiers get the precious sense of journey as you cross mountain ranges and venture up to Avoriaz and beyond. The Morclan chair provides direct access to 2 black and 3 red runs, all of which are challenging. There is a vast mileage, bumps the size of VW Beetles, and the added bonus of weaving across and through Switzerland. Advanced skiers really have it all!

Snowboarding

There are fantastic snowboarding opportunities in and around the Portes du Soleil, including challenging runs, half pipes and boarder cross. For those who proclaim themselves as hardcore, Avoriaz is the place for you with a snow park, half pipes and a huge powder field that will have you bouncing through open forests and weaving through trees.

Apres Ski

This tranquil village becomes lively by night, offering an abundance of exciting bars and cosy restaurants to choose from. The Tunnel bar is very popular with the British and has a DJ or live music playing every night. If you are looking for a bit of French tradition, head to The Godille next to the Super Chatel gondola, or spend a cosy evening in the locals’ hotspot, Isba.

Activities

You really are spoiled for choice when it comes to expanding your holiday ski experience in Châtel. Toboggan runs are fun for all the family, adventurous individuals can try their hand at ice diving, or you can simply take a relaxed glide around the outdoor ice rink. If you are looking to spend a day off from skiing, you could explore the adjoining scenery with a snow-shoe excursion.

Eating Out

There is a wide variety of restaurants to choose for your evening meal ranging from English menus to seafood to traditional Savoyard specialities. The rustic Vieux Four is very good value and provides delicious dishes, and the new L’Escalier has an interestingly different menu that will appeal to all tastes. For those with children, Absolute Alps provides a great selection from spaghetti Bolognese to chicken and chips. There is something for all tastes and budgets.
