Ski Holidays in France

Most people from the UK choose to ski in France rather than anywhere else in Europe because of its convenience and sheer number of resorts available. French ski resorts have the biggest lift systems and piste networks in the world, making it the number one ski destination.

France also offers the highest ski resorts in Europe, virtually guaranteeing excellent snow cover throughout the season. Many ski resorts in France also offer slopes of varying difficulty. It's not uncommon to find tough challenging black runs and long gentle runs for ski beginners in the same ski resort in France.

Most accommodation in French ski resorts has been purpose built close to the slopes, many units offering the unrivalled convenience of ski-in, ski-out. While many French ski resorts have a stunning backdrop, many accommodation units lack the visual charm of a typical Austrian hotel or Chalet.

However, things are changing. Over the past few years there have been may new Ski Chalets built in traditional style, and some of the newer ski resorts in France have been designed in a much more sympathetic style.

In addition, many of the major ski resorts in France have extended their lift systems to traditional villages lower down the valleys. Accommodation in these ski resorts is often cheaper than comparable ski accommodation built on the slopes and has the added appeal of a village après ski atmosphere.

Cuisine is taken very seriously in France; ski resorts are no exception. The range and quality of 'fast' food (and wine) served in mountain restaurants in France are generally higher than in other European countries.

If planning your ski holidays in France, beware that French school holidays are staggered throughout February and early March. You should expect French ski resorts to be particularly busy at during this period.
